Findings 1: Tracking word trends over time in House of Lords data

To mark a new era of UK government, for Think Better World's inaugural data analysis, we delved deep into the past decade of discussions from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee of the UK House of Lords.

Why the House of Lords? As the second chamber of the UK Parliament, they serve to check and challenge the work of the House of Commons by raising issues that matter most to the country. We've thus analysed discussions within the longest-standing committee on food-related topics as a barometer of the challenges the food system faces. This also comes at a timely moment as changes to the terms of membership are likely. This analysis will therefore serve as a baseline from which to detect any shift in priorities.

And why do this? By opening up data to all food stakeholders, we hope to stimulate the discussions and collaboration necessary to transform the food system, towards sustainability.

With this comprehensive dataset, we tracked Common Word Pair trends over time using natural language processing techniques and visualised the results in a captivating bar chart race!

Feel free to explore the visualisation and share your thoughts. We’d love to hear your thoughts on:

  1. What words did you find particularly intriguing?
  2. Which trends or patterns did you expect to see?
  3. What findings caught you by surprise?
  4. What additional information would you like to explore from this data?

Your insights could spark new ideas for our next round of data analysis, which will include a deep dive into who said what and crucially, how they feel through sentiment analysis. Let’s dive into this rich data pool together and explore what more we can learn!
